This Route 66 shield wood ornament carries more than a famous highway sign. My dad drove Route 66 between California and Nebraska long before I settled in Arizona, so this design brings a family memory into the larger story of America’s Mother Road.
🛣️ Miles That Stay With Us
Some roads simply get you from one place to another. Route 66 became part of the stories families told after the trip was over—the roadside stops, changing scenery, unexpected detours, and miles spent together.
That personal connection is what makes this ornament more than another piece of highway décor. It represents the roads people traveled, the places they called home, and the memories that followed them long after the car was unpacked.
🚘 The Route 66 Shield Wood Ornament Up Close
The familiar Route 66 shield stands proudly at the center, with deeply engraved lettering and large numerals that make the design instantly recognizable. Cut-through stars and American flag details reveal the darker cherry plywood beneath the lighter maple front.
“United States of America” curves across the top border, while “250 Years of Freedom” anchors the bottom. The layered construction gives the shield dimension and lets the natural contrast between the two woods do the work—no stain required.
🌵 Built in Arizona
We cut and engrave each layer on Dusty Rose, our CO2 laser, in our Arizona studio. Both layers retain their natural wood tones and have a clear finish already applied. We do not add stain or an additional clear coat.
The finished ornament measures approximately 3.5″ × 3.8″ and includes an attached brown hanging cord. This design does not offer personalization; the Route 66 shield already says exactly what it needs to say.

The Route 66 shield depends on strong lines, bold numbers, and contrast that can be seen from across the room. We pair lighter maple with darker cherry so the shield, stars, and flag details remain easy to see. The two woods bring their own character without needing added color.
