Butterfly Wall Art in Layered Wood With Intricate Floral Border

Some pieces are pretty. This one is stunning.

The butterfly fills the center with open wings and intricate mandala-style detailing cut through every layer. Flowers and vines wrap all the way around the border — not decoration, but a second design living inside the same frame. The rich dark background pulls everything forward so the pale maple layers catch the light and every cut line creates its own shadow.

The color palette is fixed on this one — five stain colors chosen specifically to work togetheron the layers of premium plywood. Silver Mesa, Sunbaked Oak, Aged Barrelwood, and Desert Walnut build depth across the layers, while the Midnight Mesa backer grounds the whole piece. The accent color lives in the wing detail, and that's where you get to make it yours: Deep Canyon (a deep navy blue) or Sonoran Ember (a warm terracotta red). Up close it's a map of every precise cut made to get there.

Feminine without being fussy. Detailed without being overwhelming. Dramatic in a way that earns its place on a gallery wall, above a bedroom dresser, in a home office, or anywhere that has been waiting for something with real depth.

You'll also choose between an open or closed back. Open back means your wall color shows through the center cutout. Closed back is a full solid panel — a little more dramatic, small up-charge.

Handcrafted in Arizona. One piece at a time. Never mass-produced.

    Make it YoursMake it Yours

    1. Choose Your Back

    • Open back means the center of the backer is cut away — your wall color shows through and becomes part of the piece. Lighter, more airy look.
    • Closed back is a full solid panel. A little more dramatic, small upcharge. Both hang the same way; it's just the look you're going for.

    2. Choose Your Accent Color

    • The butterfly and frame are Natural Maple — that's fixed. The accent lives in the wing detail.
    • Go with Deep Canyon and the wings pick up a deep navy blue. Cool, rich, and sophisticated.
    • Go with Sonoran Ember and the wings shift to a warm terracotta red. Earthy, bold, and striking against the natural palette.

Not sure? Cool-toned or neutral spaces tend to love Deep Canyon. Warmer rooms usually pair beautifully with Sonoran Ember.

    Behind the BuildBehind the Build

Every piece I make starts with premium maple plywood — real wood veneer on the top and bottom, solid Basswood core in the middle. It's significantly lighter than MDF, which matters when something's going to live on your wall for years.

The butterfly is 6 layers, all laser cut on Dusty Rose right here in my Arizona studio. Once the pieces come off the laser, I sand each one by hand before staining.

Here's how the colors work: the frame and main butterfly shape are Natural Maple — that's the palest layer, the one that gives her that clean, crisp outline against everything else. Silver Mesa (a cool grey tone) and Sunbaked Oak (warm golden brown) layer in between, building the depth you see when you look at her straight on. Aged Barrelwood goes darker — a weathered grey-brown that grounds the piece. Desert Walnut is the warmest brown of the bunch, richer and deeper, and it pulls all those layers together.

The accent — Deep Canyon or Sonoran Ember — lives in the wing detail. That's your choice. Deep Canyon is a deep navy blue. Sonoran Ember is a warm terracotta red. Both look great against this palette; it just depends on your space.

Behind all of it is the Midnight Mesa backer. It's near-black, and it makes every layer in front of it pop. Go open back and your wall color shows through the center cutout. Go closed and it's a full solid panel — a little more dramatic, small upcharge, selected at checkout.

Keyhole hangers are pre-installed on the back. Two drywall nails, no tools, no measuring. Ready to hang right out of the box.

She's one of the more detailed pieces I make — and one of my favorites to watch come together.

    Treat SomeoneTreat Someone

You already know who this is for. She's the one whose house actually looks like her — not a catalog. She has opinions about her walls and she's not settling for something she could find at any big box store.

This piece is perfect for the butterfly lover, the nature girl, the one who leans toward botanical prints and handmade things. The one who would rather wait for something special than grab something generic off a shelf.

    Great for:

    • Mother's Day — no guessing required, this one speaks for itself
    • Birthdays for the woman who's hard to buy for
    • Housewarming for someone setting up a bedroom, office, or reading nook
    • Bridal shower or wedding gift for the couple who already has everything except real art
    • Treating yourself — because your walls deserve it too

Want to pull the whole room together? The Woodland Wildlife Candle Holders pair beautifully with this piece for a layered, handcrafted nature vibe throughout the space. (link opens in new window)

A Few Things to KnowA Few Things to Know

She's tough but she's wood, so let's treat her right:

    • Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth — no Windex, no cleaning sprays
    • Indoor use only (she's not an outdoor girl).
    • Keep her out of direct sunlight to prevent fading over time
    • Not for bathrooms or high-humidity spaces — she's an indoor piece
    • Hang her on two standard drywall nails using the laser-cut hangers built into the back frame — no additional hardware required
    • Production time is 7–10 business days

A couple more things worth knowing:

    • Wood grain varies from piece to piece — that's not a flaw, that's character
    • Colors may look slightly different on your screen than in person, depending on your monitor — but I think you're going to love her in person
    • All sales are final on handcrafted made-to-order items — but if something arrives damaged or not right, please reach out. I'll make it right. (hi, that's me, Terrie)
    A Few Things to Know

    Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from wall art I'd find at a big box store?

Each piece is laser cut, stained (if needed), assembled, and finished by me in my Arizona studio using premium hardwood plywood. It is made from real wood veneer over a wood core rather than heavy MDF, and every piece has natural variations in grain and color.

Can I choose my own stain colors?

Yes. The product page shows the available colorways, and you can also message us to build a custom combination from the full stain chart.

Will the stain color look exactly like it does on my screen?

It should be close, but screens display color differently and real wood absorbs stain according to its grain. Your piece may appear slightly lighter, darker, or richer than it does on your screen.

    How do I clean it?

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use sprays, cleaners, or moisture.

    Can it be personalized?

This design does not have the personalization option due to its design.

Does it come ready to hang, or do I need to find my own hardware?

Yes. A laser-cut hanger is built directly into the back of the artwork. It hangs on a standard picture nail. Nails and screws are not included.

What is the difference between 5-layer and 6-layer closed back?

The 5-layer version has an open back, allowing your wall color to show through and become part of the design. The 6-layer version adds a solid plywood backer for stronger contrast and a bolder, more finished appearance. Both versions hang the same way.

How long does it take to ship my wood product?

Production time is 5 to 10 business days after then cancellation period has passed . Shipping time is additional.

    Is it heavy?

No. The premium maple plywood is much lighter than MDF while still providing a sturdy, layered construction.

    What if it arrives damaged?

Reach out right away with a photo and we'll make it right. If the package is damaged then that would be a shipper issue but we will help you out as much as possible. The best course of action is the send us a message.
