Handcrafted Hummingbird Layered Wood Wall Art — Six-Layer Dimensional Design

Look closely and you'll count six layers. Step back and all you see is a hummingbird that looks like it could take flight right off your wall.

Each layer is laser cut, sanded by hand, and stained before everything gets stacked and assembled. The hummingbird and frame are Natural Maple — the palest layer in the piece — and they stand out against the richer, deeper colors behind them in a way that gives the whole design real dimension. It catches the light differently depending on where you're standing, which means it looks a little different every time you walk past it.

You'll pick your color combination from the dropdown menu. One option leans cool — teal and deep navy. The other goes warm — terracotta and red. The hummingbird stays the same either way; it's just a matter of what works in your space.

You'll also decide between an open or closed back. Open back means your wall color shows through the center cutout and actually becomes part of the piece. Closed back is a full solid panel — a little more dramatic, small up-charge.

Handcrafted in Arizona. One piece at a time. Never mass-produced.

    1. Choose Your Back

Open back means the center of the backer is cut away — your wall color shows through and becomes part of the piece. It's a lighter, more airy look. Closed back is a full solid panel behind the design. A little more dramatic, small up-charge. Both hang the same way; it's just about the look you're going for.

    2. Choose Your Color Combination

Two options, both beautiful — just different moods.

Go with Desert Tide + Deep Canyon and you get cool, rich tones — a muted teal and deep navy that lean moody and sophisticated. This is the combination pictured.

Go with Cactus Bloom + Sonoran Ember and the whole piece warms up — terracotta and a warm red that feel earthy and bold.

Not sure which one? Think about the room it's going in. Cool and neutral walls tend to love the teal/navy combo. Warmer tones in the space usually pair beautifully with the terracotta/red.

    Behind the BuildBehind the Build

Every piece starts with premium maple plywood — real wood veneer on the top and bottom, solid Basswood core in the middle. It's significantly lighter than MDF, which matters when something's going on your wall for the long haul.

The hummingbird is 6 layers, all laser cut on Dusty Rose right here in my Arizona studio. Once the pieces come off the laser, I sand each one by hand before staining.

The hummingbird and frame are Natural Maple — the lightest layer in the whole piece, and the one that makes her pop. Desert Walnut (a warm honey-brown) and Silver Mesa (a cool grey) layer in behind her, building depth and giving the design that dimensional look you don't get from a print or a decal.

Then comes your color combination. Desert Tide is a muted teal — soft and cool. Deep Canyon is deep navy. Together they give the piece a rich, moody feel. If you go with Cactus Bloom and Sonoran Ember instead, the whole palette shifts warm — earthy terracotta and red that feel bold and grounded.

The Midnight Mesa backer sits behind everything — near-black, which makes every layer in front of it stand out. Open back lets your wall color show through the center cutout. Closed back gives you a full solid panel.

Once she's assembled, I apply a clear coat to protect the finish and bring out the richness of the stains.

Keyhole hangers are pre-installed on the back. Two drywall nails, no tools, no measuring.

Before she leaves my studio, I inspect the alignment, finish, edges, and overall appearance. My standard is simple: if it's not something I'd proudly give to my own parents, it doesn't leave my studio.

    She's delicate-looking. But she's built to last.

    Treat SomeoneTreat Someone

You already know exactly who this is for. She's the one with a hummingbird feeder in the backyard. The one who stops mid-conversation to point out a bird she spotted. The one whose home already feels like a little piece of nature — and this fits right in.

It also works for someone who just loves something that's clearly handmade. Not bought from a big box store. Not mass-produced. Made by a person, with care, one piece at a time.

    Great for:

    • Mom or Grandma
    • The nature lover in your life
    • Bird watchers and garden enthusiasts
    • A housewarming gift for someone starting fresh somewhere new
    • Anyone decorating in a cottage, boho, or nature-inspired style
    • Birthdays, Mother's Day, Christmas, or just because

Pair it with one of our Woodland Candle Holders for a gift that really makes an impression. (link opens in new window)

A Few Things to KnowA Few Things to Know

She's tough but she's wood, so let's treat her right:

    • Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth — no Windex, no cleaning sprays
    • Keep her out of direct sunlight to prevent fading over time
    • Not for bathrooms or high-humidity spaces — she's an indoor piece
    • Keyhole hangers are pre-installed — two drywall nails, no tools, no measuring
    • Production time is 7–10 business days

A couple more things worth knowing:

    • Wood grain varies from piece to piece — that's not a flaw, that's character
    • Colors may look slightly different on your screen than in person, depending on your monitor — but I think you're going to love her in person
    • All sales are final on handcrafted made-to-order items — but if something arrives damaged or not right, please reach out. I'll make it right. (hi, that's me, Terrie)
    A Few Things to Know

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 5-layer and 6-layer closed back?

The 5-layer version has an open back, allowing your wall color to show through and become part of the design. The 6-layer version adds a solid plywood backer for stronger contrast and a bolder, more finished appearance. Both versions hang the same way.

Does it come ready to hang, or do I need to find my own hardware?

Yes. A laser-cut hanger is built directly into the back of the artwork. It hangs on a standard picture nail. Nails and screws are not included.

How is this different from wall art I'd find at a big box store?

Each piece is laser cut, stained (if needed), assembled, and finished by me in my Arizona studio using premium hardwood plywood. It is made from real wood veneer over a wood core rather than heavy MDF, and every piece has natural variations in grain and color.

Will the stain color look exactly like it does on my screen?

It should be close, but screens display color differently and real wood absorbs stain according to its grain. Your piece may appear slightly lighter, darker, or richer than it does on your screen.

How long does it take to ship my wood product?

Production time is 5 to 10 business days after then cancellation period has passed . Shipping time is additional.

    How do I clean it?

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use sprays, cleaners, or moisture.

    Is it heavy?

No. The premium maple plywood is much lighter than MDF while still providing a sturdy, layered construction.
