Highland Cow Layered Wood Wall Art: Farmhouse DΓ©cor with Real Depth and Dimension

Some wall art blends in. This one does not.

The Highland Cow is built for the farmhouse lover who wants something with actual personality β€” warm, layered, rich with depth, and detailed enough to make people stop mid-conversation and say "wait, what IS that?" Big horns. Gloriously fluffy hair. Intricate mandala-style cutwork that runs layer by layer through the body so the detail doesn't just sit on the surface β€” it lives inside the piece. It's the kind of thing you find yourself looking at differently every time the light changes.

Natural Maple, Sunbaked Oak, Old World Chestnut, Red Rock, and Desert Walnut layer together across the geometric mosaic background like the Arizona landscape itself. Warm, rich, and completely one of a kind. Because when Dusty Rose cuts it and we assemble it by hand, no two are ever exactly alike. The grain does what the grain does, and every piece ends up a little different.

Keyhole hangers live right in the back frame, so hanging her is pretty easy. No hardware run. No guessing. Just put her where she belongs and let her do her thing.

Handcrafted in Arizona with a whole lot of love and laser precision. Moo. πŸ„

    1. Choose Your Back
Open back means the center of the backer is cut away β€” your wall color shows through and becomes part of the piece. It's a lighter, more open look that lets the geometric mosaic breathe a little.

Closed back is a full solid panel behind the design. More dramatic, slightly more finished. Small up-charge, selected at checkout.

The colors are fixed β€” no choices there. Just pick your back and she's ready to go.

    Behind the BuildBehind the Build

Highland Cow Layered Wood Wall Art: Warm Tones, Real Depth, Built by Hand

Every piece starts with premium maple plywood β€” real wood veneer on the top and bottom, solid Basswood core in the middle. Significantly lighter than MDF and built to hang on your wall for years.

The Highland Cow is 6 layers, all laser cut on Dusty Rose right here in my Arizona studio. The cow silhouette and frame are Natural Maple β€” the palest layer, and the one that makes all that mandala-style cutwork inside the body pop against the deeper tones behind it.

The geometric mosaic background is where the color story happens. Sunbaked Oak, Old World Chestnut, Red Rock, and Desert Walnut β€” all warm, earthy tones that sit in the same family but read differently depending on the light. They layer together across those rectangular blocks and create the kind of depth that makes people lean in for a closer look.

Behind everything sits the Midnight Mesa backer β€” near-black, which makes every layer in front of it stand out. Go open back and your wall shows through the center cutout. Go closed and it's a full solid panel.

Once she's assembled, I apply a clear coat to protect the finish and bring out the richness of the stains. Then the keyhole hangers go on β€” two nails on the outer back frame near the top. Two drywall nails and she's up.

Before she leaves my studio, I inspect the alignment, finish, edges, and overall appearance. My standard is simple: if it's not something I'd proudly give to my own parents, it doesn't leave my studio.

She's a lot of cow. In the best possible way.

    Treat SomeoneTreat Someone

You already know someone who would lose her mind over this.

She's the one whose whole house is farmhouse vibes β€” shiplap, warm wood tones, and at least one "Home Sweet Home" sign somewhere. Or maybe she's just obsessed with Highland Cows specifically, because honestly, who isn't. Either way, this is the piece she didn't know she needed until she sees it.

It also works beautifully as a gift for someone moving into a new place and trying to make it feel like home fast. Nothing says "this space has personality" quite like a handcrafted layered piece on the wall.

    Great for:

    • The farmhouse decor lover
    • Highland Cow collectors and enthusiasts
    • New homeowners and housewarming gifts
    • Anyone decorating in a rustic, boho, or cottagecore style
    • Mom, Grandma, a best friend with great taste
    • Birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day, housewarming, or just because

Pair her with one of our Woodland Candle Holders for a gift set that's anything but generic. (link opens in new window)

A Few Things to KnowA Few Things to Know

She's tough but she's wood, so let's treat her right:

    • Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth β€” no Windex, no cleaning sprays
    • Keep her out of direct sunlight to prevent fading over time
    • Not for bathrooms or high-humidity spaces β€” she's an indoor piece
    • Hang her on two standard drywall nails using the built-in keyhole hangers on the back frame β€” no additional hardware required
    • Production time is 7–10 business days

A couple more things worth knowing:

    • Wood grain varies from piece to piece β€” that's not a flaw, that's character
    • Colors may look slightly different on your screen than in person, depending on your monitor β€” but I think you're going to love her in person
    • All sales are final on handcrafted made-to-order items β€” but if something arrives damaged or not right, please reach out. I'll make it right. (hi, that's me, Terrie)
    A Few Things to Know

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 5-layer and 6-layer closed back? οΌ‹

The 5-layer version has an open back, allowing your wall color to show through and become part of the design. The 6-layer version adds a solid plywood backer for stronger contrast and a bolder, more finished appearance. Both versions hang the same way.

Does it come ready to hang, or do I need to find my own hardware? οΌ‹

Yes. A laser-cut hanger is built directly into the back of the artwork. It hangs on a standard picture nail. Nails and screws are not included.

How is this different from wall art I'd find at a big box store? οΌ‹

Each piece is laser cut, stained (if needed), assembled, and finished by me in my Arizona studio using premium hardwood plywood. It is made from real wood veneer over a wood core rather than heavy MDF, and every piece has natural variations in grain and color.

Will the stain color look exactly like it does on my screen? οΌ‹

It should be close, but screens display color differently and real wood absorbs stain according to its grain. Your piece may appear slightly lighter, darker, or richer than it does on your screen.

How long does it take to ship my wood product? οΌ‹

Production time is 5 to 10 business days after then cancellation period has passed . Shipping time is additional.

How do I clean it? οΌ‹

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use sprays, cleaners, or moisture.

    Is it heavy? οΌ‹

No. The premium maple plywood is much lighter than MDF while still providing a sturdy, layered construction.
